Advanced Medical Diagnostic Image Viewer

Healthcare Application Software Digital Engineering

Overview

A US-based medical imaging solutions provider sought to develop a web-based advanced diagnostic viewer to replace their legacy desktop software system. The outdated technology stack of the existing software product posed considerable maintenance challenges and hindered the introduction of new features based on end user demand. The customer’s goal was to build a next-generation Medical Diagnostic Image Viewer utilizing the Open Health Imaging Foundation (OHIF) Viewer platform, enabling faster time-to-market and enhanced functionality.

The customer intended to transition to an extensible solution based on the OHIF Viewer platform while preserving several critical features unique to their current product. Their existing diagnostic viewer, though feature-rich, was difficult to maintain and lacked flexibility for further enhancements. In addition to building a more adaptable platform, they aimed to integrate AI-assisted labelling and add support for various imaging file formats.

The key requirements were:

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Build diagnostic features that transform the OHIF Viewer into a powerful tool for complex clinical diagnostic applications, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Custom Workflow: Tailor the framework to meet specific workflows, user preferences and institutional standards.
  • System Integration: Integrate with existing PACS and MONAI Label Server, along with support for additional file formats beyond the native OHIF capabilities.

OHIF Viewer is an open-source, web-based DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) viewer designed for viewing and analysing medical images. It supports various imaging modalities, offering multi-frame image viewing, annotations, and measurements. Its highly customizable architecture made it the ideal choice for the customer, allowing extensive modifications to meet their specific requirements.

The customer partnered with us based on our OHIF platform and medical imaging software expertise. We developed a minimum viable product (MVP) in 12 weeks, focusing on essential features and architecture changes. Additional functionalities were implemented iteratively to meet their end-user needs.

Major developments included:

  • Diagnostics: Digital Pathology, PET CT/MR Fusion, Segmentation, Spine Labelling, Ophthalmology, and ROI Tools.
  • Workflow: UI/UX improvements, Custom Hanging Protocols, Advanced Measurement Panel, Series List Panel, and Annotation Tools.
  • Integration: Custom data source integration, NIfTI file support, MONAI Label integration, and support for multiple file formats (MHD, JPG, PNG, TIFF, ZIP, etc.).

Engaged with a multi-year contract, serving as their exclusive development partner, Trenser provides business analysis, full-cycle software development, and system integration services. The engagement is ongoing with continuous feature development based on their product roadmap. Trenser also provides long-term maintenance support for their market-released products.

Project Outcome

  • Delivered the MVP in 3 months, proving the platform's adaptability for custom requirements on the customer's roadmap.
  • Accelerated time-to-market for the Advanced OHIF Viewer as a next-generation product to replace the existing solution.
  • Achieved cost-effective development by leveraging the OHIF Viewer platform rather than building an entirely new solution.
